What does it take to become a Beauty Therapist?

What qualifications and experience do I need?

For entry level, in-salon beauty therapist jobs most employers will expect beauty therapists to be qualified to level three with an amount of hands on beauty therapy experience. Whilst studying at Beauty Skills Academy you will have the opportunity to work on your peers and member of the public. We make a small charge to members of the public to help cover some of the treatments costs and to attach a value to your treatment, clients are more discerning when they pay and are more likely to provide honest and constructive feedback which will help you improve your techniques. We also provide opportunities for you to work in community settings, such as care homes and education providers to broaden your experience of a diverse client mix. Some employers will accept a level two qualification for lower level junior therapist positions and this may be a good option if the salon is willing to employ you as an advanced apprentice A keen interest in the beauty therapy industry is essential. A commitment to keeping up to date with new developments and undertaking further training is expected. An ability to carry out treatments to a high standard that enhance the client’s appearance, improve general well-being or relive stress.

What personal skills and qualities do I need?

High standards of personal presentation and hygiene are vital as you will be working in close contact with your clients. A welcoming, professional attitude and an ability to empathise with clients is important. Excellent communication skills to understand client objectives and your attention to detail will soon enable you to develop and grow your own client list. You will need to be self-motivated and prepared to undertake the less glamorous tasks such as setting up treatments rooms, booking appointments and admin. Hours of work can vary depending on the type of salon or spa but you should expect to work a combination of days, evenings and weekends.

Where could I find work?

Beauty salons and spas are found in locations throughout the world, on cruise ships, aeroplanes and resorts. If you have a desire to travel or base yourself in another country long or short term the opportunities are plentiful for ambitious therapists with significant salon experience. Self-employment is possible for experienced and motivated beauty therapists.

Therapists with significant salon experience and strong admin skills can progress to management positions.
